Title:  Understanding the Mental Process of Thoughts and Emotions

Chapter 7
Attack Awareness
The are two type of attacks one has to prepare for.  The surprise attack and the perceived attack.  The surprise attack has no warning.  The response will be instinctive in nature.

EXAMPLE:  One is unexpectedly attacked to the head from behind.

REACTION: One bends forward and wraps one’s arms over head for protection and bends forward, retreating from the attack.

NO THOUGHT:  An uncontrolled echo response from external stimulus.  No decision only responsive action/reaction.

Surprise attacks are felt before they are seen and the natural human response is the first course action. Cover/Withdrawal (a form of retreat) is general rule.  Many variables depending on the type of attack, the weapon and number of attackers, etc. The body and mind will cover and withdraw from pain as a primary instinctive function.  This energy is primarily defensive and generally done without any thought.  As a rule of thumb the response is immediate however no follow-up action is predetermined which means the mind has to process the attack before determining a logical response.  If the attack is ongoing one has only his basic animal instinct of flight, fight and freeze.

A perceived attack, one is aware and has a mental grasp that threat or danger is present it can been seen, heard, and or felt (input from senses or a stimulation of the internal alarm).  Here the thought cycle comes into play.  The threat is perceived by the senses and the individual knowledge and emotions control action or reaction.  A mind that is not defensively prepared and understood can stall and one can fail to arrive a proper course of action and leave one in the worst possible situation.

This is the command and control center of one’s decision making process.  Command it or it commands you.

Mindsetting
Mindset is 1. A fixed mental attitude or disposition that predetermines a person's responses to and interpretations of situations.  2. An inclination or a habit.
A person's mind-set is their way of thinking and their opinions.
A preplanned decision on what course of action to take.

A proper mindset allows one to go into action without delay.  The fact that many life and death situation are measured in seconds it is important to go into action without delay.

A Defensive mindset simply means that one has a pre-determined plan of action.  He knows what he is going to do and is prepared to go into action.

EXAMPLE:  You see a potential attacker approaching you.  You make the decision to retreat into the darkness.  With the secondary mindset if the attacker does not allow me to retreat I will attack him.

As you can see by this example the mind has already concluded what course of action to take.  This will greatly reduce the response time as information does not have to cycle through the thought process.  You mind and body are prepared for action.  With a proper mindset one has use of the highest level of thought which makes man different from animals.  Mindset with proper levels of stress control man has access to the analytical mind and is able to think and change and has within himself the greatest of all weapons, mental control.
